Disability Awareness Game

THE AIMS OF THE GAME

The CapAble Disability Awareness Game aims at creating awareness on the barriers that students with disabilities face during different stages of their university experience and enables the player to empathize, but also reflect on solutions to the barriers and their roles in creating an enabling environment for people with disabilities in higher education.

About The Game

This is a fun, competitive and engaging game for 2 to 10 players.
The goal of the game is to go through the stages of university, from admission to graduation and entering the job market!

But… your avatar has a disability. This enables you to step into their shoes and experience life on campus as someone with an impairment.
And watch out! Sometimes, unforeseen events happen in life. These can be opportunities, or disasters.

Luckily, resources exist to help overcome the barriers that your avatar faces!

How To Play

Now let's play!

STEP 1

  • Lay out the game board, separate, shuffle and stack the cards
accordingly (Avatar cards, Event cards, Opportunity/Disaster cards)
  • Separate the event cards according to their colours, facing up.
  • Shuffle the Avatar cards and keep them together in one stack, facing down.
  •  Shuffle the Opportunity/Disaster cards and keep them together in one stack, facing down.

STEP 2

  • Each player should pick a card from the avatar stack. These cards should be facing down so that the avatars are picked at random.
  • After picking an avatar card, each team member will roll the dice ONCE. The number you roll determines the nature and severity of your avatar’s impairment.

Game play

  • Place all tokens at the START point.
  • Roll the dice and move your token according to the number drawn.
  • Pick an event card corresponding to the number your token lands on. Read the scenario/event out loud and each player will then discuss how they are affected in the scenario/event.
  • Repeat for each player.
Note: If you roll a number that has already been discussed, there is no need to repeat the discussion, just wait your turn to roll the dice again.
  • If your token stops at the blue/purple section pick a card from the Opportunity/Disaster stack. Read aloud the card you picked and follow the instructions on the card.

  • STOP sign: At this point in the game, this is your opportunity to pause and reflect on your journey so far. You can also end your game at any STOP points in the game, and resume at any time.
  • This point of the game can also act as your starting point should you want to play only a particular stage of the game.
  • At the end of the journey, before you claim success, scan the QR code on the game or log onto the website and fill in the one minute survey (see below).

Congratulations!
